Mental health disorders affect how we think, feel, and navigate the world around us.

They influence our relationships, our work, our sense of self—and for millions of people, they make even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. If you’re reading this because you or someone you love is struggling, the first thing you need to know is this: you are not alone. Mental health conditions are far more common than most people realize, and with the right support, recovery is possible.

Mental illness is not a sign of weakness, a character flaw, or something you caused. Mental health disorders are serious medical conditions that affect more than 1 in 5 adults in the United States each year.1 Anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, trauma-related conditions, and other psychiatric disorders deeply impact day-to-day living—but they are treatable.2,3 Whether you’re experiencing symptoms for the first time or have been struggling for years, understanding what you’re facing is a powerful first step.

At Amber Behavioral Health, we believe that healing begins with compassionate care, evidence-based treatment, and the courage to seek help.

What Are Mental Health Disorders?

Mental health disorders are medical conditions that affect how you think, feel, behave, and relate to others.4 These conditions go beyond occasional stress or sadness. They cause persistent symptoms that disrupt your daily life—your work, relationships, ability to care for yourself, and overall wellbeing.5

Mental health conditions can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, income, or background. They involve changes in brain chemistry, structure, and function that impact mood, perception, and behavior.6 Like diabetes or heart disease, mental health disorders are real medical conditions—not personal failures or signs of weakness.
Some people experience symptoms that come and go.

Others live with chronic conditions that require ongoing management. The good news?

With proper treatment and support, most people with mental health disorders can recover and lead fulfilling lives.

Types of Mental Health Disorders

Mental health disorders fall into several major categories based on their primary symptoms and how they affect thinking, mood, and behavior. Understanding these categories can help you recognize what you or a loved one may be experiencing and guide you toward the right type of care.10

Mood Disorders

Mood disorders are characterized by persistent changes in emotional state that affect your ability to function in daily life.11 These conditions involve periods of extreme sadness, elevated mood, or fluctuations between both. Mood disorders impact how you feel about yourself, others, and the world around you—often making it difficult to maintain relationships, work, or find joy in activities you once enjoyed.

Types of Mood Disorders

Depression
(Major Depressive Disorder)

Depression is a persistent condition that affects how you think, feel, and handle daily activities, lasting for at least two weeks.12

Bipolar Disorder
(BPD I or BPD II)

Bipolar disorder causes dramatic shifts between manic episodes (elevated mood and energy) and depressive episodes (low mood and energy).13

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)

Seasonal affective disorder is a type of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, typically occurring during fall and winter months.14

Symptoms of Mood Disorders

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities once enjoyed
  • Significant changes in appetite or weight
  • Sleep disturbances (insomnia or oversleeping)
  • Fatigue and loss of energy
  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

How Mood Disorders Impact Daily Functioning

Mood disorders can make even basic tasks feel insurmountable. Going to work, maintaining relationships, or getting out of bed may require tremendous effort.15 Left untreated, these conditions can lead to substance use, physical health problems, and relationship breakdown. The emotional pain can feel endless—but with proper treatment, recovery is possible.

Residential Treatment for Mood Disorders at Amber Behavioral Health

When outpatient therapy isn’t enough, residential treatment provides intensive, structured support in a safe environment. At Amber Behavioral Health, we offer evidence-based treatment for depression, bipolar disorder, and other mood disorders through personalized therapy, medication management, and compassionate care.

Anxiety Disorders

Anxiety disorders involve excessive fear, worry, and physical symptoms that interfere with daily activities.16 While everyone experiences anxiety from time to time, anxiety disorders cause persistent, overwhelming feelings that don’t go away and often worsen over time. These conditions make it difficult to manage work, relationships, and everyday tasks—leading many people to avoid situations that trigger their symptoms.

Types of Anxiety Disorders

Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Generalized anxiety disorder affects many people causing persistent and excessive worry about everyday activities and events that is difficult to control.17

Panic Disorder or
Panic Attacks

Panic disorder causes repeated, unexpected panic attacks—sudden episodes of intense fear accompanied by physical symptoms like heart palpitations, shortness of breath, and chest pain.18

Specific Phobias & Fears

Specific phobias are intense, irrational fears of particular objects or situations (such as heights, flying, or animals) that lead to avoidance behaviors which impact healthy living.20

Social Anxiety
Disorder

Social anxiety disorder involves overwhelming fear and self-consciousness in social situations due to concerns about being judged, embarrassed, or overall rejected by others.19

Symptoms of Anxiety Disorders

  • Excessive worry or fear that’s hard to control
  • Feeling restless, on edge, or unable to relax
  • Physical symptoms: rapid heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath
  • Difficulty concentrating or racing thoughts
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Avoiding situations that trigger anxiety
  • Panic attacks (sudden, intense episodes of fear)
  • Muscle tension and fatigue

How Anxiety Disorders Impact Daily Functioning

Anxiety disorders can keep you trapped in cycles of fear and avoidance. You may skip social events, struggle at work, or isolate yourself to prevent uncomfortable feelings.21 Physical symptoms can be so intense that people mistake them for heart attacks or other medical emergencies. Without treatment, anxiety disorders often lead to depression, substance use, and diminished quality of life.

Residential Treatment for Anxiety Disorders at Amber Behavioral Health

When anxiety becomes overwhelming and outpatient care isn’t providing relief, residential treatment offers a structured environment where you can learn to manage symptoms effectively. At Amber Behavioral Health, our evidence-based approach includes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), exposure therapy, and medication management to help you regain control of your life.

Trauma & Stress-Related Disorders

Trauma-related disorders develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event—such as violence, abuse, accidents, natural disasters, or combat.22 These conditions affect how your brain processes and responds to danger, often leaving you feeling unsafe even when the threat has passed. Trauma can fundamentally change how you view yourself, others, and the world around you.

Types of Trauma & Stress-Related Disorders

Post-Traumatic Stress (PTSD)

PTSD develops after exposure to actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence, causing intrusive memories, avoidance, and negative changes in mood.23

Acute Stress Disorder

Acute stress disorder involves similar symptoms to PTSD but occurs immediately after a traumatic event and lasts between three days and one month.24 It is acute, because it does not last long.

Complex Post-Traumatic Stress

Complex PTSD results from prolonged, repeated trauma (such as ongoing abuse or captivity) and includes symptoms of PTSD and difficulties with emotional regulation.25

Grief and Complicated Grief

While grief is a natural response to loss, complicated grief involves persistent, intense mourning that interferes with daily functioning and doesn’t improve over a prolonged period of time.26

Symptoms of Trauma Disorders

  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares about the traumatic event
  • Avoiding reminders of the trauma (people, places, conversations)
  • Negative thoughts about yourself or the world
  • Feeling detached, emotionally numb, or unable to experience positive emotions
  • Hypervigilance (being constantly on guard)
  • Exaggerated startle response
  • Difficulty sleeping or concentrating
  • Irritability or angry outbursts

How Trauma Disorders Impact Daily Functioning

Trauma disorders can make the world feel perpetually dangerous. You may struggle to trust others, experience frequent emotional overwhelm, or feel disconnected from your own life.27 Many people with trauma disorders also develop depression, anxiety, or turn to substances to cope with unbearable feelings. Relationships suffer when trauma symptoms create distance between you and loved ones.
