The Anxiety Screening Assessment Quiz
At Amber Behavioral Health we understand the importance of privacy when screening for anxiety. Optimal screening and assessment is essential to determining the presence of underlying mental health conditions, like generalized anxiety disorder, and the potential need for treatment. Given the high prevalence of anxiety disorders within the community, and the under- or missed-diagnosis of a condition that can negatively impact one’s life in such a profound manner, we believe that making anxiety screening and assessment widely available is important.
The following anxiety quiz is a free, at-home screening tool that you can use to help you determine if you may be struggling with anxiety that could potentially benefit from professional treatment. What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is one of the most common mental health disorders in the world. An estimated 3.59M people worry excessively over things that may or may not be in their control due to anxiety disorders. Although the prevalence of anxiety disorders does vary significantly between countries, it is estimated that generalized anxiety or other types of anxiety disorders impact 4.4% of the global population. In the U.S. alone, studies estimate that 19.1% of adults experience an anxiety disorder.
The term anxiety disorder encompasses a variety of scenarios and situations in which someone feels overly anxious. While it is normal to feel anxious at times, an anxiety disorder can make feelings of fear, worry, panic, or anxiousness overwhelming and uncontrollable. People who struggle with anxiety disorder will often state that panic, fear, or anxiousness negatively affects their day-to-day routines and overall quality of life.
Screening for Anxiety Disorders
Screening means to check for illness or to look for symptoms of a condition. Screening for anxiety disorders involves asking patients to think about the past days, weeks, or months to determine how they’ve felt about life in general. The General Anxiety Disorder 7, or GAD-7 screening, measures the underlying presence and severity of an anxiety disorder by asking questions such as “How often in the past two weeks have you felt nervous?” or “How often in the past two weeks have you had trouble relaxing?”
While you may be struggling with an anxiety disorder it is important to understand that certain life factors can contribute to how you feel and cope with day-to-day routines and events. It is entirely possible to suffer from an anxiety disorder that only lasts a few months and is related to a situation, such as grief, loss, or trauma, for which you can get help and overcome. Not all anxiety disorders are something that you’ll struggle with for an entire lifetime, but some can be.
What the Anxiety Screening Reveals
The purpose of the screening questions in the anxiety assessment is not only to determine the presence of anxiety, but also to determine the severity of anxiety on a scale from 0 (I’m not suffering from any anxiety at all) to 21 (I’m extremely anxious and suffering from severe anxiety). Scores from 5-9 signify mild anxiety while a score between 10 and 14 signals moderate-anxiety and a score between 15 and 21 represents severe anxiety. Anxiety screening tests like the GAD-7 are commonly used for assessing severity of self-reported anxiety both in clinical practice and in external environments.
If the anxiety test reveals moderate to severe anxiety symptoms are present, consider seeking further treatment help to ensure safety and long-term recovery. It is important to understand that the anxiety screening assessment cannot take into consideration things like recent history of loss, trauma, abuse, or other scenarios that may contribute to feelings of worry or anxiousness. Additionally, the assessment does not consider co-occurring conditions, such as addiction, illness, or other mental health conditions such as depression, PTSD, or other conditions.
This anxiety quiz is reliable and frequently used in treatment settings to determine the presence of problematic anxiety. Information obtained from the anxiety screening is helpful for:
